The Ketubah is not merely a formal marriage document, but a central foundation of the sanctity of the Jewish home and married life according to Torah law. Written prior to the chuppah, it constitutes a binding halachic obligation of the husband toward his wife - to provide sustenance, support, honor, clothing, and all her needs with dignity, in accordance with longstanding Jewish custom.

The Ketubah includes a financial obligation payable in the event of divorce, ensuring that separation is never taken lightly, but only after serious consideration and sincere efforts toward shalom bayit. This safeguard upholds the wife’s dignity and security, establishing marriage upon responsibility, stability, and holiness.
