Candle lighting is a sacred and beautiful Jewish tradition that officially ushers the peace, warmth, and holiness of Shabbat into the home. As the busy week fades away, these precious moments of lighting the candles offer a powerful opportunity to pause, reflect, and pray for blessing, health, and happiness for our families and the entire Jewish community.
To help you experience this weekly ritual with ease and absolute clarity, we have provided the essential candle lighting blessing and the traditional personal prayer following it in three clean formats below: the original punctuated Hebrew, a precise phonetic English transliteration, and a faithful English translation.
1. The Shabbat Candle Lighting Blessing –
Phonetic English Transliteration
Ba-ruch a-tah A-do-nai, E-lo-hei-nu me-lech ha-o-lam, a-sher kid-sha-nu be-mitz-vo-tav, ve-tzi-va-nu le-had-lik ner shel Shab-bat.
English Translation
Blessed are You, HASHEM, our God, King of the universe, Who has sanctified us with His commandments and commanded us to kindle the light of Shabbat.
2. Traditional Prayer After Lighting –

English Translation
May it be Your will, HASHEM, my God and God of Israel, that You be favorable to me, my husband, and all my relatives; and grant us and all of Israel a good and long life. Remember us with a good remembrance and blessing, consider us with a consideration of salvation and mercy, and cause Your Divine Presence to dwell among us.
Privilege us to raise children and grandchildren who are wise and understanding, who love HASHEM and fear God, people of truth, holy offspring, cleaving to HASHEM, who illuminate the world with Torah, good deeds, and every labor of service to the Creator.
Please, hear my supplication in the merit of Sarah, Rebecca, Rachel, and Leah, our matriarchs, and cause our light to shine so that it is never extinguished, and shine Your face that we may be saved. Amen.
